Christopher 'Flamer' Spry was supposedly based on the artist's son, Peter Hampson, but bears no resemblance to him.Little Peter (on his little trike - as usual) and Flamer Spry on the Rogue Planet Phantos - from the Eagle comic serial 'The Rogue Planet' - originally illustrated by Frank Hampson.
'Flamer' was what Frank called a 'mind drawing'.
Unlike Commander Lex O'Mally, who was also drawn from imagination, and was very realistically and convincingly represented, 'Flamer' was far less successful -

'Flamer Spry on Cryptos'

So here is 'Flamer', as he really was (or should we say is - as he is still 14, and on trips in space with Colonel Dan) - and we know this to be correct because 'Little Peter' was with 'Flamer' during Operation Crypt.

Ulysses is derived from Ulixes, the Latin name for Ὀδυσσεύς - Odysseus, a character in ancient Greek literature.
Odysseus, also known by the Latin name Ulysses was a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and a hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey.
Odysseus also plays a key role in Homer's Iliad and other works in that same epic cycle.
Husband of Penelope, father of Telemachus, and son of Laërtes and Anticlea, Odysseus is renowned for his brilliance, guile, and versatility (polytropos), and is hence known by the epithet Odysseus the Cunning (mētis, or "cunning intelligence").
He is most famous for the ten eventful years he took to return home after the decade-long Trojan War.

WAGNERIAN SERIES

Doppelporträt
König Ludwig II mit Richard Wagner

Ludwig II, König von Bayern, was probably the savior of Wagner's career.
Without Ludwig, it is doubtful that Wagner's later operas would have been composed, much less premiered at the prestigious Munich Royal Court Theatre (now the Bavarian State Opera).

Zac als Lohengrin - mit dem Schwan

Lohengrin is an opera in three acts, composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850.
The story of Lohengrin is taken from medieval German romance, notably the 'Parzival' of Wolfram von Eschenbach, and its sequel, 'Lohengrin', written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of 'Garin le Loherain'.
It is part of the 'Knight of the Swan' tradition.

'Siegfreid schmiedet das Schwert Nothung'

Siegfried is the third of the four operas that constitute Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner. It premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 16 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of The Ring. This part of the opera is primarily inspired by the story of the legendary hero Siegfried in Norse mythology. Siegfried is a young man without fear. Here he is just re-forging Siegmund's sword 'Northung', and is about to use the newly wrought sword to split the anvil in two - to demonstrate its miraculous qualities.

'Zac als Siegfried - mit Brünhilde'

Die Walküre is the second of the four operas that form the cycle 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner.
'Die Walküre's' best-known excerpt is the "Ride of the Valkyries".
Wagner took his tale from the Norse mythology told in the 'Volsunga Saga' and the 'Poetic Edda'.
Brünnhilde is a shieldmaiden and a Valkyrie in Germanic mythology. After Siegfried has killed the dragon, Fafnir, and decapitated Mime, he finds Brünnhilde on a fire girt rock. She has been put into an enchanted sleep by Wotan, and can only be awoken by a kiss, by the mightiest of heroes - Siegfried - who can brave Loki's magic flames - and after the kiss - they immediately fall in love !

'Götterdämmerung' (Twilight of the Gods) is the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four operas titled 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' (The Ring of the Nibelung).
'Wotan's ravens fly up distracting Siegfried, and Hagen stabs him in the back with his spear.
The others look on in horror, and Hagen explains in three words ("Meineid rächt sich!" – "Perjury avenges itself") that since Siegfried admitted loving Brünnhilde, the oath he swore on Hagen's spear was obviously false, therefore it was Hagen's duty to kill him with it.'

'Zac als Tristan - mit Isolde'

Tristan und Isolde is an opera, or music drama, in three acts by Richard Wagner to a German libretto by the composer, based largely on the romance by Gottfried von Strassburg.
It was composed between 1857 and 1859, and premiered at the Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater in Munich on 10 June 1865 with Hans von Bülow conducting.
Wagner referred to the work not as an opera, but called it "eine Handlung" (literally a drama, a plot or an action).

'O sink hernieder Nacht der Liebe'
Tristan und Isolde

© Copyright Zac Sawyer 2015

The lovers, at last alone and freed from the constraints of courtly life, express their passion for each other. Tristan decries the realm of daylight which is false, unreal, and keeps them apart. It is only in night, he claims, that they can truly be together and only in the long night of death can they be eternally united ("O sink' hernieder, Nacht der Liebe"). During their long night of love, Brangäne calls a warning several times that the night is ending ("Einsam wachend in der Nacht"), but her cries fall upon deaf ears.

'O sink hernieder,
Nacht der Liebe,
gib Vergessen,
dass ich lebe;
nimm mich auf
in deinen Schoss,
löse von
der Welt mich los !'

'Zac als Parsifal - Ritter des Grals'

'Parsifal is the last and greatest opera by Richard Wagner - in three acts.
It is loosely based on Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, the 13th century epic poem of the Arthurian knight Parzival (Percival) and his quest for the Holy Grail, and on Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval, the Story of the Grail.'

George von Hoeßlin (1851-1923) is an interesting figure in art in view of his origins and study. German by heritage, but born in Hungary and educated in the United States, after his family emigrated to North America in 1856.
In 1870 he wanted to study art and returned to Europe (München) where he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts.
In München, (Munich), he trained under Wilhelm Lindenschmit (1829 -1 895), a German history painter. He traveled to Rome and Venice for additional studies later on.
In 1880 he returned to Boston, Mass.
He made return trips to München after his return to America.
The drawing was probably a preparatory study for an historical painting, part of his oeuvre of portraits and historical paintings.

Franz Ritter von Stuck (February 23, 1863 – August 30, 1928), born Franz Stuck and ennobled in 1906, was a German symbolist/Art Nouveau painter, sculptor, engraver, and architect.
Stuck was born at Tettenweis, in Bavaria. From an early age he displayed an affinity for drawing and caricature. To begin his artistic education he relocated in 1878 to Munich, where he would settle for life. From 1881 to 1885 Stuck attended the Munich Academy.
Stuck's subject matter was primarily from mythology, inspired by the work of Arnold Böcklin. Large forms dominate most of his paintings and indicate his proclivities for sculpture. His seductive female nudes are a prime example of popular Symbolist content. Stuck paid much attention to the frames for his paintings and generally designed them himself with such careful use of panels, gilt carving and inscriptions that the frames must be considered as an integral part of the overall piece.

Christen Schiellerup Købke (26 May 1810 – 7 February 1848), Danish painter, was born in Copenhagen. He is one of the best known artists belonging to the Golden Age of Danish Painting.
Købke is recognized today as one of the most talented among Denmark’s Golden Age painters and the most internationally renowned Danish painter of his generation. The painterly interpretations he made of his surroundings stand as high-points of the period.

Based on 'Amaryllis' -  1866 by Arnold Böcklin - Arnold Böcklin (16 October 1827 – 16 January 1901) was a German Swiss symbolist painter.
Influenced by Romanticism his painting is symbolist with mythological subjects often overlapping with the Pre-Raphaelites. His pictures portray mythological, fantastical figures along classical architecture constructions (often revealing an obsession with death) creating a strange, fantasy world.
Böcklin is best known for his five versions (painted in 1880-1886) of Isle of the Dead, which partly evokes the English Cemetery, Florence, close to his studio and where his baby daughter Maria had been buried. An early version of the painting was commissioned by a Madame Berna, a widow who wanted a painting with a dream-like atmosphere.
